DEPRESSION AND MOOD DISORDERS

Feeling strong emotions about the loss of a loved one, a failed exam, or any number of upsetting events is perfectly normal. Mood disorders are when those normal emotions become more intense, persistent, unusual, or otherwise disruptive to everyday life. A depressive episode involves pervasive sadness or irritability. In contrast, a manic episode involves abnormally elevated, expansive, or irritable mood and is a sign of bipolar disorder.

Mood disorders can be very serious. Episodes tend to last at least one or two weeks but can last much longer, especially if untreated. No matter the severity or duration, there is help available and recovery is possible. Seeking counseling is a very important step to begin your recovery and help manage or prevent future episodes.
